The American Board of Certification is the nation's premier legal specialty certification organization - certifying attorneys as specialists in business bankruptcy, consumer bankruptcy and creditors' rights law.

Application Process

The first step is to review the Rules & Regulations of the ABC to ascertain your eligibility. If you believe you are eligible, fill out the Short Form Application and send it to the ABC along with payment of the appropriate non-refundable application fee.

Long Form

Upon receipt of the Short Form Application, ABC will send you the Long Form application for your completion. You will have until December 31 of the year following the year in which you submit your short-form to complete and return the long form.

Examination

Once the short form and application fees are submitted, an attorney is eligible to sit for the certification examination. This is true even if the Long Form Application has not been completed. To sit for the certification exam complete the Exam Registration Form and submit it along with the appropriate fee. Read more on Exam Information.

NOTE: You may complete the Long-Form and the exam in any order within the 2-year period. You do not have to complete the Long Form prior to taking the exam or vice versa.

Applications for Recertification are due by October 31 of the year in which certification expires.
